Wake set for Jersey City boy hit and killed by jitney bus - NJ.com

A wake for George Gonzalez will be held at Evergreen Funeral home on Friday from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 7 to 9 p.m. The boy was crossing Kennedy Boulevard on Friday to catch his Beloved Charter School bus when he was hit by a jitney bus at the Neptune Avenue intersection. He was taken to Jersey City Medical Center where he died a short time later. The 11-year-old old was a wide receiver for his recreational football team. His team was undefeated and George was looking forward to playing in a game scheduled for the day he died, his family said. Known to his family by his nickname "Turtle," George enjoyed playing video games and hanging out with other children in the neighborhood. Authorities said the driver of the bus, 44-year-old Raul Delatorre-Galarza, had four suspensions on his license. He was charged with causing a death while driving with a suspended license and was being being held in Hudson County jail on a $30,000 bail. The 11-year-old is the third person killed on Kennedy Boulevard in a two-week span. Residents marched on a stretch of the busy roadway advocating for safety and speed enforcement two days after George died. A fundraising page to help George's family with funeral costs has generated more than $10,000 in donations. Evergreen Funeral Home is located at 159 Garrison Ave.Caitlin Mota may be reached at cmota@jjournal.com.
